The Merry Pier in St. Pete Beach has been an area fishing destination for as long as most can remember. Located on the Intracostal Waterway, just around Pass A Grille point they are in a perfect location to serve the needs of residents and visitors alike. Merry Pier allows fisherman to give the waters around it a chance by letting them fish from it and there are miles of seawall surrounding the baithouse. Depending on the season and tides it is known to be a pretty good spot for Spanish Mackerel, bluefish, redfish and snook. There's good tidal flow and being so close to the open water there can be a tremendous variety of species around.
With the sea wall on both sides of the pier fisherman will certainly find a spot that is unpopulated and there are park benches placed regularly along the sidewalk for your comfort. The pilings directly North of the Pier looked to be prime habitat for sheepshead and there's little doubt that the structure of the pier itself provides protection for many fish.
The bait house offers a pretty good selection of rods, reels and tackle and they also sell live shrimp. If you're just visiting our area, didn't pack the gear and need your fishing fix they also rent rods and reels from the bait house.
Merry Pier is a short ride by boat to Shell Key and the offer very reasonably priced ferries to the island for shelling and bird watching. The Shell Island Shuttle has been operating from Merry Pier for as long as one can remeber and expects to be doing so for as far as one can imagine.
Fishing charters are also available from the pier. When I visited they had two offshore vessels primed and ready to go. One, the Offshore Hustler, looked to be about a twenty foot open fisherman and the Getaway II was a full blown sport fisher that looked ready to run to the middle grounds.
