Location: St. Petersburg | Trout has become my main target this month and can be caught very easily on the right grass flat. They are definitely still eating greenbacks and white bait if you can find them but they are showing a preference for shrimp. I like to use a light combo with 15-20 lb braid and 25 lb Segaur fluorocarbon. I prefer smaller hooks especially for trout so a #1 size owner hook will do the trick. Both the bobber and free-lining methods will work but a Cajun Thunder bobber with a live shrimp about 2 feet below seems to work the best. Simply pop the bobber a few times and let it sit. The fish will come running to the sound and strike the shrimp. If it’s a little too windy I will use a small pinch weight. If you can't get any shrimp a DOA Shrimp will work almost as well. The best color seems to be the Glow Shrimp pattern. This was the average size of the trout.
The Snook are starting to make their appearances in the dock lights once again in between the cold front snaps but if you can find the right light there will always be some Snook there. They are still chasing the larger greenbacks around the light but they too are starting to show a definite preference for the shrimp. We have landed 2 In the 2 nights we fished so far this month and lost a real nice one. They are very active as well biting and fighting hard as if the water was warm. There are still some Snook in the backwaters including cross bayou and Joes Creek if you know the right spots. They can be caught on the same size hook as the trout just upsize your tackle a little to 25 lb braid and 30 lb Fluorocarbon leader. Suspending Twitch baits and DOA's are working well for Snook along with live shrimp and greenbacks.
The Redfish are still giving a great bite on the grass flats and for some reason the best bait seems to be jigs. We have caught a whole lot more on jigs than on every other bait including live. The best producing pattern is a 5 inch Exude Dart in Gold Flake color backed with a Mission Fishin 1/4 oz. Gold Jig head. I don't know why this color is so good so but works magic for me. The best one was 27 a near perfect slot fish. We caught about 14 or 15 of the average size which was this around 20 inches nothing really huge but alot of fun.
The Sheephead are showing in some pretty good schools inshore as usual especially for this time of year. You can use just about any crustacean for bait including Barnacles, Oysters, Sand Fleas, Fiddlers, Shrimp, and Asian Green Muscles. Simply scrape some barnacles in the water off of any given piling or structure and sink your bait to the bottom and let it drift. Feel for the lightest little tap and you’re on. Where there's one theres alot more. That’s it for now guys, go catch em. ~ ShallowMinded Btw I got my decals for my boat so I will have some pictures for you guys soon.
