Location: Tampa | Ive been working on my web site. Its actually live right now and I have been tweaking it a little at a time. This is a first time thing for me. Im useing Go Daddys website tonight program and it is also hosted thru them. I have a email into tech support but thought maybe you could help faster and in laymens terms. I used firefox as my browser when designing the site. The site should display properly on most browsers including IE. But it doesnt display properly on IE.What possibly could be the problem? Location: Pinellas Point | Captain Steve, that's a great start and thanks for posting! About IE and Firefox... with IE7 it's been more important to check your pages in different browsers. I use Firefox as well, and the problem with checking browsers on your own computer is that if you have IE7 you can't install IE6. The free version is kinda slow, but if you'll check browsershots.org they'll give you a screen shot of your page in the browsers that you choose. Where I have run into things is never with Firefox and always with getting things to display properly in both versions of Internet Explorer. I'll have a look in IE and repost but in the interim... a couple of general things: - Remove the direct email link on your contact page. There are some really efficient bots that crawl the web just looking for email addresses. The addresses are added to lists that get sold to spammers. Here's a link to an email encoder that will put all of the characters in unicode so that it will look the same to visitors but email harvesters won't be able to collect it. http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html
- Edit your page titles to reflect the content of the page. I did a blog post on it a few days ago if you don't mind reading a bit. Page Title & Anchor Text
A couple of good things that your program is doing: - It's using CSS (cascading style sheets) for the buttons instead of using images so it looks better to visitors but will look like a standard text link to spiders. Also, by having the css in an external file it cuts down on the bandwidth and increases the code to content ratio.
- It rewrites the url's on the fly to take out the variables which will make it easier for search engines to crawl and should help your rankings down the road. For example, your page contact_us.html would probably be something like index.php?pg_id=contact%20us without the rewrite.
Great start and I'm looking forward to seeing it develop. As time goes on you'll probably want to move away from the site builder program for a bunch of reasons but as you're wanting to get it functional quick and don't mind doing the work yourself, nice start!

Location: Tampa | Thats weird. When I use IE6 to view it on my connection half of the title on top of the page is missing and the contact info is out of alignment. Maybe its just my connection? Thanks for the info on the email link. I will work on that for sure. Im also going to read your blog. ----- Capt. Steve Betz

Location: Pinellas Point | Hmmm, I'll have a look again... but not having IE 6 installed I have to rely on browsershots.org. The big problem I've had with IE is getting vertical submenu's to display properly but the fix I found was including a few lines of code in the body of the page and adding an external file for IE7 What would happen in IE6 is that the menu just wouldn't display so I don't think it has any bearing on your issue but would be glad to send you the fix if you can access/edit the code. -----
