How do you keep track of the hits you get on a website with out putting one of those hit counters on the page?

I agree on those silly counters... (they're worse than useless). There are lot's of answers but the best is probably Google Analytics. If you don't have one, sign up for a Gmail account and then an analytics account.

GMail Registration - Analytics Registration

There's a little script that you put on each page that you want to track and will start getting the data a couple of days after you're verified. It's really easy, free, the most robust program on the web and there's no tacky image/counter on your pages. GA will give you all the visitor, traffic and trending data that you'll need.

OK I signed up for analytics but Im not doing something right. When ever I add the code it show visible when I publish the page.

Whats does this mean? What is the body tag? Im using a template to design so could that be the problem?

Copy the following code block into every webpage you want to track immediately before the </body> tag.

Thanks

.Hello,

That simply means to add the code before the </body> tag in your page HTML. Look for the </body> tag, and place the code directly before it. The code is invisible if you have closed the tags properly in the code. Post the URL to your site so we can look at the code.

Hello Capt. Steve,

Nice web site! Do you have access to the HTML of your web site? I see you are using a template, and a site designer provided by your host. I ask this because I see that you didn't add the code to your site as of yet.

Hello,

Send me the code, I'll insert it for you and send the page file back to you. You'll just need to re-upload the page to your server.......

Thanks for the offer. I got it taken care of. Scott was kind enough to help me out with it.

Now I have to spend some time developing keywords and learning how to submit them to the search engines.

Just an FYI, don't bother submitting your site to search engines as it's a waste of time. The search engines will find you from links to your site.

That process hasn't been of any use for at least a few years now.

Thanks for the heads up.

My ex was a internet marketing guru. I learned a little from her but that was a long time ago. I was just going by what she used to do.

I guess times change.

So are you saying I dont need to worry about key words? Im a little confused again.

Keywords are a 'Good Thing', be sure to not repeat words and or phrase's; it's the search engine submission issue that is in question as far as relevance.

Google Analytics is great for in depth analysis but don't rely solely on it for your data. Use a mix of sources. Try Quantcast and Compete for different perspectives such as visitor demographics and comparisons. If you provide RSS feeds, use Feedburner to monitor your subscribers. You can pull data down on their patterns and behaviors.

There are also some interesting new applications out there like CrazyEgg that allow you to pick up thermal images of users mouse movements to weigh the importance of different parts of your site.

Provide meta data for every single page you create and follow W3C coding standards and you should be fine. If you have a lot of pages, adopt a CMS to handle them. It will save a lot of headache.
