Location: Tampa Bay | Weather Has Fish Unsettled
By BILL MILLER Posted July 30, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
Unsettled weather this week has made fishing difficult. Fish don’t seem to like unsettled weather, and they don’t bite very well. I don’t like fishing in the rain and lightning, so I don’t catch very well.
Fishing on Tuesday with captain Billy Miller, we managed to sneak in a half-day fishing trip between the storms. Starting in the shipping channel in the morning, we hooked two tarpon and caught one on big, hand-sized greenbacks. As the storms popped up, we moved to Weedon Island for protection from the elements. Targeting the channel edges near the mangroves, we were able to catch snook on the incoming tide. We were constantly changing to different baits, trying corked and uncorked, weighted and unweighted, looking for the right combo. It really didn’t matter what combo we used, the snook appeared to be nervous by the changing weather and didn’t bite anything with the aggressiveness normally associated with snook.
Tarpon are still around. Fishing along the Gulf beaches with dead shad on the bottom produced good action this past week. Plenty of tarpon are in the upper parts of Tampa Bay. The catfish and small sharks are so bad that fishing with bait, dead or alive, is almost impossible. Try using 77M MirrOlures and DOA Bait Busters, in bait-fish colors, for the best action.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Networks Catch 47. ----- Subscribe to our area fishing articles news feed | |
