Location: Tampa Bay | Scalloping: A Great Summer Trip
By MEL BERMAN Posted August 01, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
At a time when most of us are literally and figuratively burned out by hot summer fishing, free diving for scallops seems most appealing, providing great fun for the entire family. Captain Jay Schroeder reports that scalloping has been productive. “Scallop season is in full swing, where it is legal to harvest them just north of the Hernando/Pasco county line and, although the morning inshore bite has been hot, it is that mid-day heat that makes scalloping so much fun. Over the last two weeks, visibility has been excellent and scallops have been easy pickings.”
According to captain Brent Gaskill, consistent weather has allowed local anglers to work the same spots they fished the day before, with the fish there waiting for them the next morning.
He said large schools of Spanish mackerel are “crashing bait pods up and down the main shipping channel into the bay. Small jigs or tiny spoons worked quickly through the activity are as close to a guarantee as it gets in the fishing world. The mackerel are not huge but very plentiful, as it’s possible to hook one on every cast.”
The snapper bite has remained strong in the bay. Other available species include snook, redfish, pompano, flounder, tarpon and more. Gaskill recommends fishing “during the coolest hours of the day for the best results, and always keep an eye on the weather.”
