Location: Tampa Bay | Fish At Night On Full Moons
By RAY MARKHAM Posted August 15, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
Full moons can do crazy things to some people. And in some respects, fish aren’t much different than we are.
For years, I have heard people say the bite on the full moon is slow. That might be true, but like all living things, we get hungry at some point during the day, and for most of us, when we eat is dictated by our work schedules. That is not the case for fish.
When most people fish, it is usually during daylight hours or just before dawn. That time frame might not always be productive, but at some point during the 24-hour period, fish will have to eat. Maybe it’s time to change our habits by fishing at a different time.
Not all fish are nocturnal feeders, but most will eat at almost any hour if they are hungry. If your successes seem to be lacking when fishing on the full moon and you fish during the day, why not try night fishing and see what happens?
I’ve done a lot of fishing on full-moon nights, and I find the action to be more predictable than fishing during daylight hours. With the full moon on a clear night making it seem like it’s daylight, fish don’t have to rely on senses other than their sight to feed.
They can see their prey. Topwater artificial baits can be extremely effective. Walking baits silhouetted against the moon are easy to see, and the irresistible zig-zagging of the bait can illicit some of the most violent attacks from predatory fish.
When it comes to catching big fish in the moonlight, the new MirrOlure MirrOmullet has been very effective, but for me, nothing crushes big fish like the Top Dog.
