Captain's Corner: Seek clear water

By Doug Hemmer, Times Correspondent
In print: Sunday, August 24, 2008

What's hot: The strong winds of the past week will leave inshore waters murky. The trick is to target areas with the clearest water. Thick grass flats with good water movement are a good place to start. The tall grass helps filter dirt out of the water. Another place to look is in the back of residential canals. There will be deep water for the dirt to settle in. There also will be less movement that can pull murky water from other areas. Large amounts of rainwater will be flowing out of the rivers. This pushes the fish out of the river until they find water with a higher salt content. Look for fish to be hanging around the mouth of the river and the potholes in the grass flats closest to the river's mouth.

Tips: You can help fish by using baits with a strong smell. Frozen chum, cut baits and lures with built-in scent allow fish to find what they can't see. One of the first places I fish after strong winds is at the edge of the Tampa Bay shipping channel. A chum block tied off the stern and a few dozen shrimp gives you a good shot at some keeper-sized mangrove snapper.
