Location: Tampa Bay | Redfish Are Beginning To Bite
By BILL MILLER Posted September 10, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
The Homosassa/Crystal River fall redfish season has begun. I was fishing there Tuesday morning with captain Jim Long and we caught slot-sized redfish, and bigger, around the St. Martins Keys. Long likes to fish the hard rocky bottom around the islands on an incoming tide. We used small to medium pinfish under a clicking cork to catch our twenty plus redfish. Captain William Toney also limited out on redfish and big keeper trout using tail hooked shrimp and a cork.
Despite the windy weather, Spanish mackerel have been biting at sunrise on the south Skyway Fishing Pier. Silver spoons and Gotcha plugs have been getting most of the action. Mangrove snapper have been biting on knocker rigged shrimp fished around the pilings.
Now is a good time to take inventory on your fishing tackle. Check your reels to be in good working order, clean and oil them. If the line on your reels is old or low, now is a good time to replace it. Make sure all the guides on your rods are smooth. Run a piece of stocking through the guides to check for nicks. Organize and restock your tackle box.
For boaters have your engines checked and all regular maintenance done. Check your bait well and bilge pumps to make sure they are all working properly. If you use a trailer, re grease the wheel bearings, visually inspect your tires for cuts and low air pressure and test all of your lights.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
