Location: Tampa Bay | Passing Storm Stirs Up Redfish

It’s well-known in fishing circles that just before a front comes through, the fish feed heavily. On Tuesday, that phenomenon was in evidence as Hurricane Ike plowed its way northward in the Gulf, skirting the Bay area.
That day, captain Brent Gaskill was working a mangrove island, and he reports having a banner redfish trip. “The first bait out was greeted by an over-slot red before I could even get a second rod baited. Five consecutive doubleheaders later, after I could get three rods out, we finally got a triple. The hot bite lasted for a couple of hours, catching somewhere around 40 redfish brought to the boat and released. Most were top of the slot to over-slot fish.”
In addition to the approaching front, Gaskill experienced other ideal conditions. “We had a high and moving tide, overcast skies and a large school of mullet working in the area.”
He said the bait of choice was pinfish. “We used a spread of four rods to keep baits in the water while my two anglers fought fish.”
Now that the Skyways piers have been sliced in half, with only the west side of the span still open, anglers are still doing a lot of catching there, especially on the outgoing tide. And while RV’s and trucks are prohibited, those in passenger cars can still park next to their fishing spot.
