What's hot: Mangrove snapper fishing is excellent in 80- to 130-foot depths. Large structures are holding large schools. These fish are skittish and usually shy away from heavy leaders and large hooks. Downsize your tackle to the point you're giving them a good chance of getting away. Start the rig with a 5-ought to 7-ought hook attached to a 4- to 5-foot length of 30-50 pound fluorocarbon leader. The water's depth and tide's speed should determine the lead. If you're fishing shallower than 100 feet, 3- to 4-ounce should be all you need.
Other targets: Grouper have started pushing for shallower water. Some are being caught in 70 to 90 feet. Until the water temperature reaches the low 80s, 70 feet should be the minimum depth for them. For gag grouper, a run to the 30- or 40-fathom ridges should pay off. These areas are 60-80 miles offshore. Most offshore charts should show you where to start looking for these ridges. Recent trips have produced gags to 40 pounds.
