Location: Tampa Bay | Macks And Redfish Are Abundant
By MEL BERMAN Posted September 26, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
Even before the season’s first cool front came through, mackerel activity had increased. Don McCurdy of Tampa Fishing Outfitters said sales of spoons has picked up and many of his customers report catching good numbers of Spanish mackerel in waters off the south Pinellas peninsula.
There are also many great fishing opportunities along the Gulf shoreline.
Joey Foronda of Gulf to Bay Bait and Tackle on St. Pete Beach reports excellent redfish action in the passes, off the main channels, in Boca Ceiga Bay and along the docks and mangroves. They are accompanied by abundant mangrove snapper, which seem to be everywhere this year.
Both species can easily be caught using cut bait, live shrimp or pilchards.
Foronda said that most snook being hooked these days are the huge breeders and are too big to keep.
Along the south shore of Tampa Bay, a similar story is being told, with many anglers catching impressive numbers of reds and mangos.
According to Andria Elliott of Ruskin Bait and Tackle, much of the action is at the Route 41 Broken Bridge and at Simmons Park. As for baits, Andria recommends medium shrimp or live pinfish.
Offshore, the grouper bite is expected to pick up with each cold front, especially in nearshore waters.
Remember, there are new regulations for reef fishing, mandating the use of circle hooks, a fish release device and a venting tool.
