Redfish Are Hot In Some Spots

By FRED EVERSON
Posted September 27, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune

Wind plagued South Shore anglers for much of the week, but it finally died down enough that it was manageable Thursday and Friday. There seems to bait everywhere now, but the best reports are coming from the other side of the bay. Redfish have schooled around Fort DeSoto and Tarpon Key, and the bite has been hot. Many of the fish are over the 18- to 27-inch slot, which is normal for this species in October.

I fished South Shore Tampa Bay early in the week with live bait, but the bite was slow. Water clarity has improved and there has been a slight drop in water temperature, but I didn’t see much on the flats south of Apollo Beach — a few snook and a single redfish. On the positive side, there was a lot of bait and thousands of mullet. I am seeing schools of big scaled sardines everywhere I go, including the mouth of the Little Manatee River, and on the flats either side of the river.

Keli Emery phoned in a report on Thursday from Cockroach Bay. She said she caught a couple of keeper reds and four black drum. She wanted to know if the black drum were edible, and I told her as long as they weren’t over 20 inches they would be as good as redfish. Larger drum are often infested with worms.

The mackerel bite is staying hot, but small-craft warnings persisted through the week before lifting on Friday.

I’m still hearing reports of schools of big redfish on the other side of the bay, but nothing yet from this side. Piney Point has been unusually quiet. I spoke with captain Danny Guarino of Ruskin at the Florida Sportsman Show on Saturday and he told me he was just starting to pick up a few reds on the South Shore flats, but the bite was nothing like what they are experiencing on the other side of the bay.
