Location: Tampa Bay | Flats Are Producing Redfish

Captain John Griffith reports a lot of redfish, along with snook and trout, are active in the Oldsmar area of Tampa Bay. The incoming tide has been the most productive, and white bait is the best bet. White bait can be found on most grass flats near the Howard Frankland Bridge.
Bayport and Hernando Beach are good areas to find redfish and trout, reports captain Jim Bradley. On high tide, Bradley looks in the creeks and tidal pools for reds and uses gold spoons or shrimp for bait. For trout and mackerel, look south of the Bayport channel for grass and flat-rock bottom. Soft plastic jigs and white bait, if you can find it, are the most productive baits.
Giant black, gag and Warsaw grouper are the catch of the day for captain Travis Palladino. Leaving before daylight, Palladino has been running to depths of 200 feet and deeper to catch grouper in the 60- to 70-pound range, red snapper to 25 pounds and amberjack weighing more than 100 pounds.
Spanish mackerel are active off the Redington and Fort DeSoto piers. A cut greenback on a short wire leader suspended under a float is the best setup. A fast-retrieved silver spoon will also get some action.
