Captain's Corner: Hunt for reds in October begins

By Rob Gorta, Times Correspondent
In print: Saturday, October 4, 2008

What's hot: Redfish have appeared in the usual hot spots. The past two weeks have been the best redfishing since the Red Tide from a few years ago. Reds are showing up in my "secret" spots, places that have had little to no action for three to four years.

What to look for: Low tide spots can be the most difficult to find. I watch the schools' movements and pay particular attention to which direction they fall off the flat. I have a theory about their movements and where they are going whatever the tide is doing. Figure that out and you have a "secret" spot of your own. The last two times I have hit my low tide spots, they yielded big numbers that I had not seen in a few years.

Bait: The water level is critical in determining what type of bait to use. At low tide, reds are wary and spook easily, therefore a light presentation is needed. Shrimp provides a light presentation and increases your chances of a hookup, or you can use a soft plastic rigged Texas-style that provides a weedless setup. At higher tides, reds are far less spooky and will eat just about any type of live bait thrown to them.
