| The morning started off great with bait all over the flats and with no pressure since I wasn't picking up my clients Jerry and his son Jimmy until 11:00 am. There was no need to chum just go to the birds and there was more white bait then ever it has just been ridiculous lately.Well with one throw and no chumming I had more bait then I could ever need so I threw about half back and blacked out the well with the rest.Things were looking good already. So with time on my hands I start fishing the flat and got some trout but the ladies moved in and after a few of those I moved on.Then in the deeper water (15 feet) I see some bait getting worked over and as I get closer I see bonita hammering the bait.I throw a whitebait into the mix and within seconds the drag is screaming and I tighten it down a little and bring one in.Now its time to pick up Jerry and his son, who are from Wisconsin to do some snook fishing. This trip was for his son Jimmy.I had told Jimmy that snook are like bass on steroids(I tell that to my northern customers so they can relate). He was really looking forward to it since the biggest fish they normally get were 8-10 inches. So we head up to Gandy area and drop the troller in and head onto the flat. again the bait is thick on the flats with pinfish and whitebait. There are a few people on the flat so we set up where we were and Jimmy catches a couple of trout and then we fished are way in.Once we got to the area I liked, I seen a few contestants so I placed anchor. It wasn't before Dad was hooked up to a nice snook and with a few head shakes and displays, Jimmy's eyes lit up.Dad did not like his picture taken so after the release Jimmy couldn't wait to get one.Well Dad had the hot hand and caught the first three so I gave Jimmy the good luck cast and a few minutes later Bam Jimmy is on. After the pic he cant wait to get another one. I tell him we have to get him a red and then he will have a slam for the first time fishing in Florida.
After a few more snook for both of them Bam it happens the typical redfish hit and he was right where he was suppose to be and he took Jimmy for a ride around the boat. For a medium sized red he was full of it and fought like his bigger brothers.
Most of the fish were caught out of sand holes on the flats using whitebait free lined on a 2/0 circle hook,30lb flouro and 10 lb spiderwire ultracast/stealth.Some fish were in the groves but many are in the pot holes. At the end of the trip they caught 17 snook, 2 trout, 1 red, 1 mangrove and some ladies to round out the day. ----- Capt. George Hastick
