Location: Tampa Bay | Fall Kingfish Run Is Starting
By BILL MILLER Posted October 11, 2008 by Tribune Sports
Fishing is red hot on the Dubai Long Pier, formerly the Redington Long Pier, according to Beach Bob. Anglers floating green backs under a cork are having non-stop action on Spanish mackerel. Snook and redfish are busting baitfish around the pilings closer to shore and tarpon are hitting pinfish, ladyfish and pumpkin seeds out on the “T.” Paul Nelson has been catching keeper flounder bouncing a Gulp shrimp tail jig off the bottom by the pilings. The four-tide days this week should bring in the kingfish.
Captain Craig Lahr took the “Hooked on Fishing” team on a variety fishing trip this week. We started in Clearwater Bay catching double limits of keeper redfish on pinfish under a cork. After that, we moved offshore of Sand Key and caught kingfish, Spanish mackerel and a 200-pound bull shark slow trolling ballyhoo and blue runners.
The fall kingfish run is starting. Kingfish have been reported off Anna Maria, in the Egmont ship channel, off the Blind Pass Drop, Clearwater Hard Bottom and the Dunedin Reef. The first kingfish flurry is usually here today and gone tomorrow. This indicates the main bunch of fall kingfish are not here yet. The Gulf is full of baitfish, so it won’t be long before a big group of hungry kings migrates to us from the north or west and calls our area home for a month or two.
Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. on Bright House Sports Network.
