Location: Tampa Bay | It’s A Redfish Kind Of Weekend
By MEL BERMAN Posted October 16, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune
There is no doubt that on the agenda for area anglers this weekend are the abundant Spanish and king mackerel roaming our Gulf waters. But while all that is taking place, there is an equally impressive showing of redfish inshore.
“The reds are so thick in the Anclote area you could walk across them,” said captain Tim Wakefield. “Using cut bait, we caught probably 70 fish in three days, and my hands are killing me.”
He also reports that the much-anticipated larger trout are showing up, and the numbers should grow after this weekend’s expected cold front. The redfish have been striking whitebait, small pinfish, spoons, jigs and plugs. But the most effective way to catch them is with a piece of cut bait.
Drifting the flats earlier this week, Jim Plastic, his brother Michael and I hooked a variety of species, including several trout up to 22 inches, numerous juvenile grouper, some mackerel and bluefish and a nice pompano.
Paul Buhrow Jr., of St. Petersburg, got out on a blustery fishing night this week. He and his fishing partner worked some docks in the choppy waters. He said “the snook there looked like torpedoes darting in and out of the lights busting baits.”
Forgetting to check his drag, Buhrow was immediately broken off by a monster snook. “I dropped that pole, picked up another, and bam — fish on!”
This time, it was a very large redfish estimated to be 38 to 40 inches. Meanwhile, his friend hooked a nice 29-inch snook.
“We took turns for about 2 hours of catching non-stop snook and reds of all sizes.”
They caught the reds on MirrOdines and the snook on Love’s Lures and bucktail jigs.
