Front Will Make Things Tough

If the weather forecasters are accurate, this could be a daunting fishing weekend. With another major cold front pouring down on the Florida peninsula, you might want to take a bye week.

If you really need that fishing fix, Saturday might be slightly better. However, strong wind and rain are forecast for Saturday, and by Sunday overnight temperatures are expected in the low 40s with a massive high that could curtail any fishing plans for Sunday.

Later next week, we expect more seasonable conditions, capped — we hope — by a milder weekend.

This week, I was slated to speak to the Sarasota Sportfishing Anglers Club. Before that event, GoFishing colleague captain Rick Grassett invited me to fish Sarasota Bay. I must say, the trip was nothing short of sensational.

We fished the mid-afternoon outgoing tide after the water warmed to an ideal 70 degrees. Tossing his favorite fly pattern, Grassett hooked several huge bluefish and trout in a matter of minutes. I was tossing the Old Bayside Shadlyn on a light 1/8-ounce jig head and caught continuous blues, trout, juvenile grouper, ladyfish and three nice pompano.

Though we fished for just a couple of hours, it was a remarkably satisfying trip.

Even more remarkable was the fact that just a couple of years ago, marine life in Sarasota Bay was totally decimated by the massive red tide of 2005. Yet this resilient area has come roaring back.

Thanks to the continuing exchange of water though the many passes, Sarasota Bay has come roaring back, and it is now home to abundant populations of mackerel, blues, pompano, trout and other popular gamefish.
