Location: Tampa Bay | Weather, wind slow offshore fish activity in west-central Florida
By Jay Mastry, Times Correspondent In print: Thursday, November 20, 2008
What's going to get hot: High wind and falling temperatures have put a hold on much of the offshore activity, but that action will get hot again when the weather stabilizes. Shallow-water grouper digging has begun to peak, and much of it has been inside 50 feet. Among the productive locations has been "Times Square," a fairly large area of rock and ledges north of the Egmont ships channel and south of the Betty Rose wreck. Much of its better bottom is scattered in 35 to 40 feet, allowing small boaters to get in on the action. Once in the area, a study of your bottom recorder will reveal the most productive areas. Start with dead bait, then offer live when the bite tapers.
Wishful thinking: Thanksgiving morning has long provided some of my most memorable kingfish trips, but without a warming trend, it won't be a good time for kingfish this year. Muddy water along the beaches and water too cold for their liking have pushed most kings south or well offshore and out of range for most of us. When conditions improve, look for the outer markers of the Egmont ships channel to be among the first locations kingfish regroup. Bait will again gather at the markers lining the channel, and the opportunist kingfish will be there to ravish it.
