I've been sick and the weather's been nasty but I had to get on the water. My neighbors had an oyster roast last night and I had heard that they were good for sheepshead so I figured I'd give it a try. (I normally use small sections of live shrimp and do pretty well). A anchored up under the first bridge going out to the Bayway... phew, that was a chore. With the current and wind ripping and being my own anchor boy. Didn't end up exactly where I'd like but close enough to reach the strike zone. Dug in the cooler and loaded a sloppy one... first cast, small tug... no bait. Reload, recast and repeat. I tried em raw, cooked but couldn't get them to stay on the hook. I didn't get any shrimp because I had the oysters so I had to move on. (the Oysters Rockefeller didn't do any better)
I didn't really want to go anywhere as the wind was blowing pretty good and I saw some fish on the bottom machine in the channel headed back to Maximo. I anchored up for about 20min just outside of the channel and tossed gulps back toward it. Caught a couple of rat reds and a bluefish. Probably could have kept that up for awhile but I just can't see hualing up the shorties for sport so I brought it in. Overall, a good day. Got to run the engine, tested the new bait well configuration (works great and more room to fish) caught a couple and learned that oysters don't work for sheepshead if you can't keep em' on the hook and I was back home and had the boat cleaned within 2 hours.
