A Shallow-Water Christmas

By MIKE ANDERSON
Posted December 26, 2008 by The Tampa Tribune

This week brought some nice negative low tides. I was invited to join good friend Reid Zoller from Loop Tackle on a Tuesday morning trip with captain Geoffrey Page on his 17-foot Maverick tunnel-hull skiff for some skinny water Sarasota Bay fishing.

The strong easterly winds blew what seemed to be almost all of the water out of the bay. That is just the way Page likes it. With the low water pushing the fish to the edges of the flats and into the pot holes, you have a lot less water to cover to try to find them.

Combine the conditions with his years of experience in the area and you have a recipe for a great morning of fishing.

We opened with several slot-sized redfish, caught on DOA CAL root-beer and gold jigs rigged on a 1/8-ounce jig head. We also got to watch as Reid, a world-class fly angler, went to work and caught a couple for himself with the fly rod. That is not an easy task in this past week’s windy conditions.

After working over the first flat pretty well, we moved on to a deep-water edge that Page was sure would be holding some large trout. He was right.

Without having to change baits, we immediately started catching nice 20- to 24-inch -trout one after another. Page said it was the best trout fishing he has seen since before the red tide of a couple of years ago.

Our reports, along with our recent trips, have given us the same indications that the trout in Tampa and Sarasota bays are healthy again. The season reopens for trout on Jan. 1, so let’s be sure to take good care of our fishery and only take what we need.

Catch captains Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the “Reel Animals Fishing Show” on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. and Sundays from 11-11:30 a.m. on WFLA, Channel 8, and on Sundays from 8-10 a.m. on 1040 AM. To book a charter, call 1-866-GAMEFISH or visit www.reelanimalsfishingshow.com.
