| Moderate temperatures from Xmas well into the new year allowed us to get out offshore where we found wide open action on the wrecks. Although it is rare, we have been blessed with whitebait (AKA pilchards if you are from south Fl. ) here on the flats of Tarpon Springs area almost all winter. At daybreak we have been stuffing our 60 gallon well to capacity with the shiny baitfish, which is probably several thousand. We then run out to some hidden wrecks in deep water where the big amberjack have greeted us at the surface before we even put a bait in the water. What happens next is just the coolest thing you can imagine. As soon as we see the river of jacks in the 20 to 60 pound class following the boat I start trickling out the live chummers and and idle off the wreck leaving a trail of disoriented baitfish and huge blow-ups. When we are a quarter mile of so off the wreck we put the anchor down and release about a hundered live baits. By towing the school off the wreck we dont have to worry about having our spot hijacked by a passing boater. Soon the water is exploding 360 degrees around the boat and we are tossing topwater plugs and watching the most insane fireworks show on the Gulf. Periodic release of fresh whiteys keeps the show going. Out comes the fly-rod, the spinning gear whatever the anglers want to try. It goes on until no one will put a bait in the water or we burn up all the bait. One day we had a school of pinfish cruise by as we had the jacks fired up. Pins are not common but are occasionally seen more than 35 miles out like this. Unfortunately for the pins, the jacks keyed in on them, balled them up on the surface, and lit them up in an unbelievable frenzy. There were pinfish flying 5 feet in the air as you may notice in these pics..... We have done good on grouper and the ever present out of season red snapper up to 18 pounds but for me the jacks have been the best game in town. ----- www.lighttacklecharters.com | |
