| Hey guys. We are all upset about the new rules and regulations for Grouper fishing. But that doesn’t mean we have nothing left to fish for. I used to have a one track mind when it cam to offshore fishing here. But as with all fishing, you need to keep trying new things and learning more ways to take advantage of our fishery. Last year during the closure I started employing new methods and new tactics of my own. One of which was targeting Mangroves and Yellowtail snappers, with light tackle. Since I usually only fish in depths of 120 feet or more, I started targeting high-profile spots that I usually would never stop on for Grouper. Anchoring well up tide of these wrecks, springs and other taller ledges, chumming heavily, and deploying smaller bites of baits on very light spinners. It paid off with great results. Terminal tackle consists of 3 feet of 20 lb. floro. connected to the main live via Albright or any line-to-line connection. Leads are between 1/4 and 1/2 oz. (even in depths of 180 feet), and a small 2/0 to 4/0 light wire circle hook. (hint Yellowtails LOVE shrimp). Let the bait fall as naturally as possible, the line should start ripping off of the reel, throw over the bail and you’re on. Give it a shot next time your out.
