I took Tom from Utah out today in hopes of getting him his first red on fly. I called him the night before and explained his chances would be slim the way the wind was howling. He replied "Im not a purist. Spinning rods will be fine." At the ramp this morning it was cold and windy as hell. That nasty N wind had pushed a lot of water out of the bay. A few places I had planned on fishing would be high and dry. Luckily I brought along my bag of tricks and pulled out some good deep water spots that would only be about 10 inches deep on a day like today . As we were leaving the ramp I asked Tom to make a few practice casts to get an idea of his casting abilities. " Oh shiit" I thought to myself. "This is going to be a long day." As he reeled in the jig, he did the ole upside down, backwards reel thing. " I know youre not left handed, Ive heard it before" I thought to myself. After watching a few casts, I saw his distance wasnt that bad, and his retrieve was alright also. So I said what the helll and let him do it his way. It didnt take long before we were on a school of about 150 upper slots. And there were more in the distance, all working our direction. Tom began hooking up pretty consitently :worthy: He was very excited about not only seeing that many fish but catching them also. We closed out the day with close to 10 nice reds all on my old stand by exude dart. No offense towards Tom here. He was a great fisherman and a fun guy to fish with. Congrats on the catches Tom :toast:
