Location: Tampa Bay | Captain's Corner: Landing tarpon now may require different technique

What's hot: Tarpon fishing remains hot but a different technique may be needed to stay productive. Many of the large schools of tarpon migrating along the gulf beaches earlier in the season have broken up into smaller bunches. Time may be better spent anchoring and letting them come to you. This time of year tarpon often cruise the gulf beaches and many go undetected. Singles, pairs and small batches of silverkings continue to flow along the beach but may not be seen rolling on the surface.
Technique: It can be productive to anchor just outside the sandbar that runs parallel to the beach and offer a presentation of baits. I like to offer four or five dead baits fly-lined on the bottom and a couple of live baits suspended beneath corks. Figuring the depth of the major flow of fish is key.
Tips: I like to plan my trips around a tide change. Paying attention to and focusing on the solunar periods can also help. Some of my most productive trips have been during a rising moon. Tarpon love to chew at night and with the next week's full moon, fishing after dark could be special.
