Spanish mackerel hot in bay

Anglers fishing with me recently on the Snook Fin-Addict out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key had good action with a variety of species.

Anglers fishing before dawn with me in the Intracoastal near Venice caught and released snook to 23 inches on my Grassett’s Snook Minnow fly and DOA Tiny TerrorEyz. We found the snook to be feeding selectively on small glass minnows and shrimp. We had to finesse them to get them to eat by making perfect presentations with the right size lures and flies.

The deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay near Buttonwood Harbor have been producing trout, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, jacks and ladyfish. We connected with Ultra Hair Clouser flies fished on intermediate and intermediate sink tip fly lines. Some of the best action has been with Spanish mackerel and little tunny near Egmont Key on flies. A recent trip produced about 10 little tunny and more than a dozen mackerel on Crease flies, poppers and Grassett’s Snook Minnow flies. Schools of Spanish mackerel and little tunny blitzed glass minnow schools for hours, providing great fly fishing action.

Captain Jim Klopfer of Adventure Charters also reported great action on the inshore artificial reefs in the Gulf off Sarasota. Anglers fishing with him caught Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds on free-lined pilchards. His anglers also did well in Sarasota Bay near Bishops Point with flounder to 18 inches, bluefish to 4 pounds, trout, jacks and ladyfish. They also caught Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, trout up to 20 inches and mangrove snapper to 16 inches near Bird Key.

Tides will be good for fishing the flats and for snook in the Intracoastal as we approach a full moon Sunday. Action in the coastal Gulf should also be good for Spanish mackerel, little tunny and more.
