Location: Tampa Bay | Elements in place for productive weekend
By MEL BERMAN Posted October 01, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune
Cooler water and air temperatures and swift full-moon tides should trigger the first real fall bite this weekend.
This also marks the beginning of what should be the most productive fishing time of the year. Many popular target species will be on the move, heading toward inshore locations, where they will spend the winter months.
Jamie Foster of the Sunshine Skyway piers reports increased action there, triggered by the cooler conditions. She said there are good numbers of Spanish mackerel available at the Skyway, along with increased grouper action. We should see more catches, mainly gag and some red grouper, with most caught on sardines, squid, live pinfish and whitebaits.
Foster also said that this week on the South Pier, an angler hooked a cobia on 10-pound test near the toll booth.
“It was quite a shocker to him. He fought it for a while, and nearly got it in, but the line snapped,” Foster said. “He was geared for trout or redfish, so that was some unexpected action and something he won’t likely forget. Several more have been landed on both piers lately, all in the 35- to 38-inch range. You can use a big greenback, a pinfish, a grunt or ladyfish to catch a cobia.”
Kayak guide Neil Taylor said that even before these first fronts, fishing has picked up dramatically.
“Even on poorer tides in the middle of the day, the fish have fed well, as evidenced by good snook action on an almost slack tide. We have located schools of 400 or more redfish as well as black drum cruising through the shallows. And after a few cold fronts, trout should also get active again.”
