Location: Tampa Bay | Try live shrimp for hogfish
By RANDY ROCHELLE Posted November 09, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune
High winds over the past week or so have kept most offshore anglers at home or very close to shore. Once the weather breaks and the seas lay down, the bottom bite should really crank up for a few days.
You won’t hear me say this often, but if it’s grouper and snapper you’re after, then wrecks and large breaks are the places to target.
When the seas kick up, grouper and snapper will run for shelter — and large ledges and wrecks are the shelter they’ll seek out. They will hold tight for a couple of days, and then move back to less pressured areas.
The hot depth for gags and mangrove snapper continues to be around 40 to 60 feet northward and 50 to 80 feet to the south.
Hogfish have anglers, not divers, talking. Just before the wind kicked up, I got several reports from anglers catching hog snapper.
A rare catch on hook and line, hogfish are normally taken by divers spearfishing.
Want to try your luck at catching a hogfish on hook and line? If so, then try dropping down some medium size live shrimp on 20-pound snapper tackle. Fish 2- to 4-foot breaks with a good live bottom in 40 to 60 feet of water. You’ll have to deal with a bunch of small bottom dwellers and maybe a few mangos, but if you’re lucky then you might just bag a hogfish.
