The mackerel are back

By BILL MILLER
Posted November 21, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune

Spanish mackerel and kingfish have returned with a vengeance, according to captain Billy Miller. Fishing two miles off St. Pete Beach, Miller and his party caught Spanish non-stop for four hours, along with kingfish up to 23 pounds. Anchoring over hard bottom and chumming with white bait was the key to success.

Randy Banger and wife Amy caught a 35-pound king slow-trolling a ladyfish near the Pass-a-Grille sea buoy.

The Spanish and kings had left the area during the last bad weather, but calm winds and clear water brought them back.

Flounder fishing is the best it has been in years. Anglers fishing the sea wall at Pass-a-Grille have been getting limits of flounder, as have the fishermen at The Dubai Pier in Redington Beach. White bait on the bottom is the key to good flounder action. The minimum length for flounder is 12 inches, and the bag limit is 10 per day per person.

Captain William Toney guided me, captain Bobby Buswell and my “Hooked on Fishing” film crew to a great day of trout fishing at Homosassa. We drifted the irregular hard-bottom flats off Homosassa Point and caught our limit of trout using the DOA Deadly Combo, CAL jigs and MirrOdines. Pearl white and root beer were the hot jig colors, and green and silver worked best on the MirrOdines. Trout fishing is catch-and-release only south of the Pasco-Pinellas line.

Grouper are migrating heavily into shallow water. Good reports of keeper gag and red grouper are being reported inside 35 feet. Inside of nine miles, anglers can keep two gag grouper and two red grouper. Outside the nine-mile mark, the limit is two gags and one red.

Captain Bill Miller hosts “Hooked on Fishing” on Bright House Sports Network, Channel 47. To book a charter with captain Bill or his son captain Billy, call (813) 363-9927.
