Location: Tampa Bay | Captain's Corner: Bottom fishing producing gag and red grouper off west-central Florida coast

What's hot: Bottom fishing. All depths to 80 feet of water are holding decent numbers of gag and red groupers. We have had our best success working the 40- to 60-foot areas. More keeper red groupers are in the 60-plus-foot depths. Gags have been working their way into shallow depths of even 25 feet.
The king: Kingfish are still available. Finding their food source has been the key to our success. Large amounts of threadfin herring have been schooling along the beaches up to a mile out, especially along the tide lines near the passes. If you can find these baits, you'll find the kings. Look for high-diving pelicans and gannets.
Giant cast nets: We have been throwing cast nets over the same bait schools with outstanding results. A heavy net of at least 8 feet is needed in deeper waters of the gulf. A 10-foot net is better but extremely hard to throw. Sometimes an extension of rope on the throw line is required to let the net sink down deep enough.
