Captain's Corner: Prepare for changing weather

By Troy P. Sapp, Times Correspondent
In Print: Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Change coming: Fishing has been great the past few days, but a change is on the way. Showers and rough weather today will keep most in port. The post-frontal conditions for this weekend will require a change in plans, but there will be options for those who are prepared.

Tactics
: The deepwater ship channels in Tampa Bay offer an opportunity to target some of our favorite offshore species without venturing into the open gulf. Snapper, grouper and king and Spanish mackerel have made a push into the bay since the water has cooled. Trolling deep-diving plugs along the ship channel or presenting live and cut baits in areas with good bottom structure has produced well recently.

Inshore: The days after this front passes will put most inshore species on the move. Finding where the fish have relocated to will be a challenge. Shallow flats and deep residential canals that are protected from the wind will be the most productive.
