Location: Tampa Bay | Action hot during holiday week

During several decades of fishing Florida waters, I have always looked forward to the usually productive Thanksgiving week. From the looks of things, another front will be coming through and conditions will be cooling down, eventually triggering more action in local waters.
This weekend, most will be targeting the huge influx of Spanish and king mackerel that are chasing bait schools just offshore. Some of the Spanish have been large and at first, anglers might think they have a king hooked.
The macks have moved to inshore structures and flats. At the Skyway the mackerel action is brisk. “Each day I see more and more familiar faces returning for the Spanish mackerel frenzy,” said Skyway Piers manager Jamie Foster. “Most anglers use a Gotcha plug, a gold or silver spoon, or a fresh-dead greenback cut into thirds so an invitingly strong scent leaks out.”
Drifting South Pinellas flats this week with TV’s Glen Pla and captain Brent Gaskill, we hooked a couple of Spanish on jigs. We also caught a variety of trout, flounder, ladyfish and jacks.
Many locals have been catching and releasing more of the larger “gator trout” that show up this time of year. Captain C.A. Richardson has been cranking in several beauties using Strike King Glass Minnow jigs. However, he urges anglers not to handle the out-of-season species, and always use a release device. This week captain Jay Plastic had a fun trip with his dad, Jim. Tossing live greenbacks along Weedon Island mangrove edges, the pair caught 36 “almost keeper” snook in just a few hours.
