Water temps hitting the perfect range

By MIKE ANDERSON
Posted November 27, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune

With water temperatures finally getting into the normal range for this time of year, things are starting to line up. Vance Tice of Tightlines Tackle, generally known as the Tampa Bay trolling guru, says the water temperature is ideal for grouper trolling, but the fish are not responding yet. The bite has been steady, but not nearly as good as it should be. Tice expects them to turn on any day now.

Captain Nobles reports that he enjoyed a decent snook bite this week, and he also said the action offshore was very good. There are a lot of keeper grouper pushing into 40 to 50 feet of water. Live pinfish, cut squid and frozen sardines all worked well.

There is steady redfish and trout action being reported around the Fort DeSoto flats. Artificial lures work best at this time of year, because they give you the ability to cover a lot of water in a short period of time to find concentrations of fish. Work the deeper edges on low water at the beginning of the incoming tide, since this really seems to be the best bite.

My favorite plastics are working well, and a new one has been successful this week. The Blurp Shad by Bass Assassin, in root beer, was this week’s bait of choice. Fished on an eighth-ounce chartreuse jig head and worked very slowly, the fish really seemed to key in on it. Working slowly is important with your artificial lures this time of year, so take your time. You have to get the bait down to where the fish are.

It’s a good time to take the family fishing, since it is not too hot and things are starting to get right.
