Deep grass flats hot in Sarasota

By RICK GRASSETT
Posted November 30, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune

Deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay have been producing fast action with a variety of species.

Anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released snook and trout to 23 inches, reds to 17 inches, blues to 4 pounds, pompano to 3 pounds and Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds on CAL jigs with shad tails and Ultra Hair Clouser flies in Sarasota Bay and the Terra Ceia Bay area recently.

Action slowed a little following the cold front late last week.

Captain Jim Klopfer, of Adventure Charters, also reported fast action in Sarasota Bay. Anglers fishing with him caught trout, pompano, bluefish, jacks, black sea bass, gag grouper and ladyfish on 3-inch Gulp shrimp on a quarter-ounce Cotee jig head and live shrimp near ICW Marker 5 and Bird Key in Sarasota Bay.

They also had action in Phillippi Creek with black drum, mangrove snapper and sheepshead on live shrimp and jacks to 8 pounds and a 25-inch snook on live pilchards.

Anglers should be aware that snook season closes Tuesday on the west coast of Florida. The season will remain closed until March 1, so anglers should handle them gently. Use tackle that is heavy enough to land them quickly and avoid removing them from the water. Trout season also remains closed in the south region during December. Full details are available at http://www.myfwc.com .

Next week’s negative low tides in the morning are favorable for reds, trout and snook in potholes and along sand bar drop-offs. Deep grass flats should continue to fish well for catch and release trout, blues, pompano and Spanish mackerel.

Look for action with little tunny and Spanish mackerel in the coastal gulf to take off when seas calm down and the water cleans up following our recent front.
