Weather changes actually help fishing

By MEL BERMAN

There’s an interesting weather dynamic in play this time of year — strong cold fronts followed by mild trends. Many might regard these seesaw conditions as a handicap. But in fact, these cooling/warming cycles actually keep our local waters in the ideal low to mid 70-degree range.

Many of the reports I get suggest that early morning trips might not be the most productive. Instead, skippers have been scheduling midday outings that coincide with good tidal flow and the somewhat warmer conditions.

Captain Dave Rieumont, who works the North Pinellas area, reports there had been a good supply of whitebait inside of Anclote Key. However, the recent cold front could drive the bait away so, this weekend, you might want to fish with an assortment of lures, especially jigs — or pick up some live shrimp.

Rieumont said there are good-size mackerel in the pass between Three Rooker Bar and Honeymoon Island. “I anchored in the pass and cut up the whitebait with a scissor and spread it out into the tide. Within 5 minutes the mackerel arrived and kept everyone busy.” He added that the trout bite has been pretty good in St. Joseph Sound. Of course, trout season is closed through the month of December south of the Pasco/Pinellas line.

If the wind lies down, this can be an excellent time of year to work the areas close to shore. The grouper bite has been outstanding there and great schools of impressively large mackerel are also foraging in those nearshore waters.

This appears to be the year of the flounder. Several anglers report catching not only a lot of them, but also many well more than 20 inches.
