Location: Tampa Bay | Offshore bite still hot
By BILLY NOBLES Posted December 04, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune
The offshore bite continues to be on fire, with plenty of nice grouper coming over the rails. Most catches are coming in 20 to 50 feet of water.
Nearshore wrecks and reefs are still holding great numbers of king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and amberjack. One thing to note this time of year is that if you are offshore and the wind shifts to the northwest, you might want to start heading in. That’s a sure sign of a cold front, and the conditions are sure to deteriorate, usually pretty quickly.
On the inshore scene, white baits are still plentiful, which as you all know is the bait of choice. We are catching good numbers of snook in the rivers and canals, along with some of the biggest trout I’ve seen on Tampa Bay since the red tide we had a few years ago that just decimated the trout population. The numbers are high as well. Just remember that trout season is closed in the South Region and doesn’t open until January.
There are still large schools of Spanish and bonito in the bay. Bonito are great for old and young alike. They are a member of the tuna family and fight like them — just a strong fish that is a blast on light tackle or a fly rod.
