Fisher Jones, Chris Morelli and their fathers had some red-hot grouper fishing in 22 feet of water off Clearwater.

Their technique was drifting near the stone crab traps using live pinfish and frozen sardines. Morelli caught his first grouper, a 28-inch gag. The young men caught four keeper gags and three keeper red grouper, and all were taken without dropping the anchor.

Trolling for grouper northwest of Anclote Key produced 11 keepers and lots of undersized grouper for Bill Graham. Graham was trolling a silver-and-green Stretch 25 big-lipped plug in 15 feet of water. The action was so fast that Graham and his party could only fish one rod in order to keep up with the action.

Grouper are also biting in Boca Ciega Bay. Summer Ray Williams, fishing with her dad C.W., caught a 26-inch grouper in 8 feet of water. Williams also lost a few that she could not keep out of the structure.

The size limit for gag grouper is 22 inches, and the daily bag limit is two per person. Recreational harvest of gag grouper is prohibited from Feb. 1 through March 31.

Spanish mackerel were biting well all along the Gulf beaches before the last cold front.

Trolling spoons and anchoring over hard, rocky bottom and chumming with live white bait has been the best method for fast action. A few kingfish have been mixed in with the mackerel.

Snook season on the Gulf coast is closed from Dec. 1 until March 1. Catch and release is allowed.
