Location: Tampa Bay | Pompano, blues hot in Sarasota Bay
By RICK GRASSETT Posted December 06, 2009 by The Tampa Tribune
Fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay continues to be one of the best options. Anglers fishing with me on the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had fast action with pompano and bluefish last week just ahead of Wednesday’s front.
Tuesday’s trip along the east side of Sarasota Bay near the Ringling Museum produced more than 15 pompano to 3 pounds and several blues to 4 pounds on Ultra Hair Clouser flies fished on intermediate sink tip fly lines. A couple of friends fishing together that day combined for 40 pompano on flies and jigs.
Wind was an issue Wednesday as a front moved in, but we still managed several pompano, blues and trout on CAL jigs with shad tails before we called it an early day.
Captain Ed Hurst, of the Reel Freedom, also had good action fishing the same area Wednesday. His anglers caught several pompano, blues and trout on jigs and flies. The action slowed Friday as the front drifted back to the north; however, we still caught pompano, a couple of blues and several nice trout near Long Bar on CAL jigs with shad tails.
I expect this action to continue once the weather stabilizes this week. With our weather in an El Nino pattern, which produces stronger fronts with more rain and wind, the key to being successful will be to fish the windows of good weather between fronts.
Fishing should also be good just before a front passes through, but will be tough for a couple of days following a front due to cooler water and wind.
