Changing conditions have fish popping

Good action on a variety of fish has been reported from Sarasota Bay to Ruskin. Big bluefish have been pounding CAL Jigs with shad tails in Sarasota Bay this past week.

While I was trying to reel an undersized trout to the boat, a good sized bluefish about 6 or 7 pounds grabbed my trout and took off with it. As I worked the fish back to the boat, it was apparent that the bluefish was not hooked but merely holding on to my lifeless trout.

Normally bluefish will just chomp down and shake their heads, shredding their prey tearing it apart, but this one was happy just to maul the trout and descale it before spitting it back at me. Perhaps it was sidetracked by a school of bluefish that blitzed the boat while my blue had the trout in its mouth.

The school passed through slashing at everything in site, and just before I could land my bluefish he spit my trout out. The action crazy at times — just fast and furious.

We’ve found some excellent catch and release snook fishing around Terra Ceia, with some of the best fishing taking place north of the Sunshine Skyway bridge. Fishing the Arkansas Glow DOA Shrimp, Mark Bellotte of Ruskin had some banner snook action while fishing near Cockroach Bay.

Bellotte, fishing out of his kayak, has been catching snook to 30 inches while fishing the area surrounding the Little Manatee River. Water temperature has been ranging from the upper 60s to the low 70s throughout the day.

With winter heading this way, fish of all kinds are getting ready for it by feeding heavily.

During the days prior to fronts blowing in, we can count on the bite to turn on. Most everything except for bluefish and ladyfish are taking a slower presentation.

Ray Markham runs out of Terra Ceia and can be reached for charter at (941) 723-2655.
