Finding good days to fish: The weather has been changing daily. This has made it hard to plan a day of fishing. During this time of year, it is important to watch the weather when planning a trip. During the winter months, conditions can change quickly. Being safe is the most important part of a trip.
Looking for a good day and the right place: I try to pick warm days with light winds to fish, but this does not always work out. So picking the right spot can make it possible to fish in almost any wind. Try rivers, canal systems and shallow flats.
Fishing in the rivers: The Anclote and Cotee rivers are very productive this time of the year. You can catch snook, redfish, trout, sheepshead and juvenile tarpon. These fish will spread out from the mouth of the river to miles up the river. There are several ways to fish for them, including trolling crankbaits and live shiners. Use live shrimp, pinfish and shiners to fish docks and oyster bars. Don't overlook bridge pilings, a great place for fish to ambush prey.
