Went out with Barfly last night to check the dock lights in the channels around Venetian Isles. I normally over pack but knew we were in the flats boat and wanted to keep it simple so I just brought my light action redbone and a small plano with jigs, jig heads and hooks. I'm gonna have to get some pics of Barfly's new old ride. It's quite the fishing machine and the custom job is next to impossible to describe. John had bait from the previous day, good sized threadfins, so we put em in the well and off we went. We got out a little before sunset so we hit the flats around Whedon but didn't see or get anything. On the way out in the channel we were dragging a gold spoon and picked up a mackerel. Kinda surprising to see mackerel that far up in the channels. At any rate, after sunset we hit the dock lights. The water was murky and the wind was blowing so it was tough to see and stay in position. Caught a couple of catfish and then ran into a couple of lights that we could see the unmistakable snook silhouette. Got tagged a couple of times... once bringing back just the head of the green back, once got spit, wrapped and broke off around the dock/barnacles once and the last... got him out of the pilings only to have him run straight under the boat and around the motor.... snap. The last couple were the most fun 45 seconds I've had in awhile and I learned a valuable lesson, if you're only bringing one rod and you're fishing for snook make sure it's stout enough to control the battle. John was playing captain most of the time because of the wind and being too deep for the power pole it was difficult to stay in position so he missed out on most of the fun. Thanks Barfly for a great time, having the bait good to go and getting us on the fish. Next time I'll have to do my part and either close the deal or take the helm. -----
