We are looking into creating a web site for family so everyone can upload pictures and add a blurb about what is going on with them. How much does it cost to start one? How difficult is it to create? Do I need any software?

Standard web sites are a snap and are very inexpensive to put up. The domain name costs around $9 annually and the hosting (server that displays your pages on the web) starts at around $100 annually.

There are alot of content mangagement systems out there that will do what you like and most are available with the hosting plans; Joomla, PHP Nuke, Blogspot etc. Where you would run into some time and/or expense is customizing them for your specific site; graphics, colors, design etc.

As far as software goes... probably not right away if you're using a standard content management system. Down the road you'd probably want to get a few tools that would help you out but initially I don't think it would be worth the investment other than maybe an FTP program. (FTP: File Transfer Protocol, it loads the files you create on your computer to your web server). Many of the discount hosting plans come with a built in FTP functionality.

You don't have to pay anything to have a web site. Just look up free web site on google and pick the best one.

You're right there MudBug, it just depends on what RedFisher is looking for. The free sites can be a great way to start and get comfortable with having a site... but all that I have seen have alot of obtrusive pop up ads and don't allow you to have your own domain.

Thanks for the information. I sure don't want anything with pop up ads and the other is cheap enough. I want to check one more time with the others to see if they will spend the time to add thier information. Do you have any suggestions on where I can buy a name or on where to buy the web server?

Redfisher... I know you! If you looked like your avatar we'd have done alot more, or alot less, fishing together. I gotta say though, it's a SERIOUS improvement!

About registering a domain name, I use namebargain.com. It's $8.88 annually and it's really easy to automatically renew, change the DNS (Domain Name Servers, in case you switch hosts), etc.

About web servers, one of the best deals out there is with BlueHost.com. You can host up to six sites on the same plan for about $100 annually. If you're sure you won't use more than the one there may be better deals out there. (They're pretty reliable though)

If you do decide to go forward with the site PM (personal message) me because I may be able to hook you up... at least with server space.

Thanks for the avatar (I thought it was hilarious), did you just get it from the web.... I'm guessing you don't know this person. Is that really a redfish (not that it matters)?

Hi !

Just wanted to share free hosting experience with you guys. The first thing is you are often restricted in space and bandwidth, so if you site ever gets busy a bit, you'll get shut down and will have to pay to be put back on. The second problem is like TBC said (he knows about the stuff), your site will be plastered with ads and popups... and this is not to mention those "The site is under maintenance"... then it changes owner and they move everything... a real nightmare.

My first site was a free hosting... at one point they put an ad that took 98% of the screen, would stick there for a good 10 seconds, would scrolldown to disapear and once it was gone, it left all it's buttons on my design... cool stuff. I moved it to an other one that only had a banner on top... but as soon as I got more than 20 visits/day, it would put the "Your bandwidth limit was exceeded"... even better.

Jocelyn, nice of you to stop by. For everyone else... "Joc" is an old friend from Canada. He is a search engine optimization professional and web designer from Montreal... or there abouts. I got to know him on a SEO forum that he's been maintaining for quite some time and he's been a tremendous resource to me through the years.

If you know me... he's the guy who started the "what up moe" stuff.

I'm guessing that if he does any fishing it would be the ice variety. (smiley here

Thanks again Joc for stopping by.

He he he... I just mentionned to one of our talented friend that I was wondering what you were up to lately, he gave me a link to this place... some are much better than me at searching... lol

Yep... fishing will be done on frozen ice soon... water is freezing in the smaller ponds and brooks. But I'm sure most go ice fishing cause they have to use some HOT liquor to keep themself warm... and wash it down with a few Moe Fuggers Light... of course... lol

I like what you did with this site buddy... ok I'll take the good SEO compliment... but sorry to argue, but I don't have 10% of the design skills you have my friend... I wanted to make a new look for one of my sites last week... the second day, I just threw it in the trash... I have too much on my plate to learn and fight with CSS and DIVs now.

<whisper>psstt!... Listen to that TBC guy... he knows his stuff</whisper>

Too funny, you know I'm always willing to kick in... maybe we can trade links for css and div's (smiley here) though the layout is always tables, it's just too damed easy.

We'll need a little chit-chat about that for sure. But links are not a problem for you... I just need an anchor and url...

I'm sure you are right about a regular site but if it's just for family a free site is easy too. What happened to redfisher?

Thanks for all the information. I be reading this one again when we settle back into a routine.

Mudbug, my mother in law was ill so I've been going back and forth between here and Orlando almost daily. Thanks for the advice.
