I had an hour or so this afternoon after the kids homework was finished so I decided to wade the flats in front of the house. I just missed low tide and the water was very calm and clear. A beautiful day. I've never really caught anything there... if I go north or south a few hundred yards or so there are alot more potholes and breaks in the oyster and sand bars but would love to take the kids out there so close and just catch fish so I keep trying. Ron hooked me up with a couple of "Shrimp Cocktails" made by Salt Water Assasin... (thanks to Captain Rick's class) and I had a few gulps and wanted to try the "hitch hiker" rig so WTF?
The gulps got tore up by big pins but I did manage a just under slot red before I ran out. Gave the shrimp cocktail a try and it got tore up too. It's an interesting, but very different, type of hook. Once I figure out putting another one on without having to retie the hook I think I'll be all over it. The action looks great and whatever was out there was happy taking off decent sized chunks so I've just gotta give it a few more trials. A nice afternoon, lots of action, no fish to bring home but my jones got fed... not bad at all for an hour or so especially since I've never had any success there before.
The image is the hook and assembly for the "shrimp cocktail" though the color I used was like the electric chicken. When the hook's in, the weight lies in the body of the lure (there's a cut down the belly... kinda like a turd). The action is way cool with the eye at the back... it kinda shrugs up on the jig.
