Got a call from Nick yesterday asking if I'd like to give the grouper a shot between 40 & 60 foot. We'd been doing the mackerel, kingfish thing for awhile and he was wanting to change it up a bit and had a couple of numbers fairly close that he hadn't hit in awhile. Well, I was game. We hit the ramp around seven and sabikid up some pinfish at a couple of markers along the way. Saw some bait near the skyway so tossed the 3/4" net at them and after getting rid of the gilled we had a decent amount of live bait to combine with the frozen that we brought so we were set and off we went. Originally the plan was to go to 60' and work our way back in but the wind was picking up so we decided to do the opposite and test our luck. The first stop was about a three foot break in about 42' and we found steady action but all shorts. Brought up a couple of trigger fish but after about 20 minutes or so we figured it wasn't happening there so we went a little deeper. We got to the second spot in about 50 foot and with a little playing around with the anchor (our lie had changed a good bit in between the spots) we were fishing steady for about the next hour. Another trigger fish, a couple of AJ's, about a 4' nurse shark, more shorts than we could count (some less than a half an inch short... but short none the less), and four keepers.. three gags and a red. We had a blast, caught a bunch of fish and had dinner for a couple of days each so we decided to call it a day without hitting the 60' spot. On the way back in the wind layed down a bit so we had a nice ride in and the sun was shining... a beautiful day to be on the water and another great fishing trip on the Ally B!
